Dermal fillers and lip fillers

Dermal fillers are a type of injectable cosmetic treatment that use hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body, to add volume, smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, and enhance facial features. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to hold onto water molecules, which helps to keep the skin hydrated and plump.

We are committed to using the high-quality products for all our treatments.

WHEN WILL I SEE MY RESULTS?
You will notice a difference immediately after treatment, though the area may swell slightly. After this swelling has gone down over the next two to three days, your optimum results will be visible. Sometimes the best and most natural looking results are obtained over a treatment journey of a few appointments, but I can advise you of this at your free consultation.

HOW LONG WILL MY RESULTS LAST?
Results typically vary from client to client, because some people naturally break down the filler more quickly than others. You can expect your results to last between 6 to 18 months, after which further treatment will be required should you wish to maintain the benefits.

What precautions should I take before hyaluronic acid dermal filler injection?
There are certain things that you should avoid before undergoing a dermal filler treatment to help ensure the best possible results and minimize the risk of complications. Here are some common things to avoid:

• Blood thinners: Avoid taking blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, for several days before your treatment. These medications can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

• Alcohol: Avoid drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours before your treatment, as it can also increase the risk of bruising and swelling.

• Sun exposure: Avoid excessive sun exposure or tanning for at least 24 hours before your treatment, as it can cause skin irritation and increase the risk of complications.

• Skin irritants: Avoid using any skincare products that contain harsh chemicals or acids, such as retinoids or glycolic acid, for several days before your treatment, as they can cause skin irritation and increase the risk of complications.

Please advise your cosmetic practitioner prior to treatment if you have suffered in the past with cold sores on the skin or lips. This viral infection may be re-activated by some injectable treatments. If cold sores develop after your dermal filler treatment please call the clinic for advice or use aciclovir cream.

Schedule your appointment at least 2 weeks before any special event. Please avoid applying make up before your appointment.
What precautions should I take after hyaluronic acid dermal filler injection?
During the first 24–48 hours after treatment you will experience redness, swelling and tenderness in the treated areas, which is a normal response. Drink plenty of cold water for 48 hours after the procedure. Bruising at the site of injection is also common and clears completely in 1-10 days. If there is any ‘unevenness’ present after 14 days, please contact the clinic for advice. Occasionally a further ‘correctional’ treatment is required within the first 2-4 weeks after your dermal filler treatment. If you would like to have further enhancement, it can be done after 1-2 months. NOTE: Any additional dermal filler required will be charged at the usual rate. After your dermal filler treatment you should:

• Avoid make-up in the treated area if possible for 24 hours.
• Avoid alcohol, caffeine, hot drinks and spicy food for 24 hours, as these may exacerbate bruising and swelling.
• Avoid medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen for 24 hours as they are blood thinning agents and may exacerbate bruising
• Avoid exercise/exertion for 24 hours
• Avoid excess sun exposure, sun beds, saunas, freezing temperatures for 2 weeks
• Try to sleep with the head elevated and avoid sleeping on the injected area for one or two days
• Hyaluronic Acid absorbs water, therefore you should drink plenty of water in order to achieve better results.
• You can use Arnica cream and arnica tablets to help alleviate any bruising.

If you suffer any allergic responses, prolonged generalised symptoms or any lumps/unevenness persists after 14 days, please contact your cosmetic practitioner for advice.
What are the possible side effects of Dermal fillers?
Even though dermal filler treatment is a minimally invasive procedure, it can still have some side effects. The more common side effects include swelling, redness, pain and bruising. These side effects can last for up two weeks and will go away on their own. Other side effects include irritation, discoloration, infection, allergic reaction, or uneven product in the skin.

Under rare cases, patients also experienced bumps (granulomas- over healing skin) underneath their skin, that can be treated by medicines, injections, or surgery.

In extremely rare cases, the injected filler can go into an artery that can cause it to block. In this situation it compromises blood flow to tissue which can cause cells to die through lack of oxygen.  This can affect skin as a sore/ulcer, or more seriously block blood flow to the retina causing blindness. If your skin discolours- a dusky blue or the appearance of a bruise in a spreading mesh pattern on your skin, or you experience extreme pain, this must be notified to your cosmetic injector and assessed urgently.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
In some treatments there is a low risk that the dermal filler will block small blood vessels causing a reduced circulation of blood to the skin. This can lead to tissue damage and possibly scarring. If you experience prolonged pain in the area injected and/or a change in skin colour (paleness, blanching, white or dusky grey discolouration as opposed to the purplish/red colour of a bruise) after your treatment, please contact your cosmetic practitioner immediately for advice.

Severe Allergy: Hyaluronic Acid administration can result in anaphylaxis, which symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, difficulty swallowing, and swelling of the tongue, eyelids, lips, and hoarseness of the voice, stomach pain, nausea or diarrhoea. If you have any of the above symptoms please report to your nearest Accident and Emergency Department or call 999 for an ambulance.

Allergy or infections can occur but are thankfully are extremely uncommon. If you get a painful or itchy bump or swelling near an injection site please contact me immediately for a review.
